Choosing the Right Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) Architecture
For commercial fleets, municipal public works yards, industrial backup power facilities, and bulk petroleum distributors across Texas, Aboveground Storage Tanks (ASTs) eliminate excavation expense and simplify visual leak inspection compared to buried systems. However, selecting the wrong UL listing for your municipal fire jurisdiction can stall permitting or force costly site redesigns.
Together with our sister tank manufacturing division, Metal Products USA, Geo Petroleum engineers, fabricates, and installs steel storage vessels built to Underwriters Laboratories and Steel Tank Institute (STI) specifications. Understanding the engineering difference between UL-142 and UL-2085 is the first step in scoping a compliant fuel system.
UL-142 Steel Aboveground Tanks: Cost-Effective Secondary Containment
UL-142 governs shop-fabricated steel aboveground tanks for flammable and combustible liquids (diesel, gasoline, aviation fuel, lubricants, and DEF outer housings). Available in cylindrical or rectangular footprints, double-wall UL-142 tanks provide built-in 110% interstitial secondary containment without requiring large concrete containment dikes.
- Best Suited For: Spacious industrial yards, agricultural and rural fuel depots, and diesel generator belly/sub-base applications with ample property-line setbacks.
- Fire Code Consideration: Standard bare-steel UL-142 tanks lack thermal insulation. Under NFPA 30 / NFPA 30A and the International Fire Code (IFC), local fire marshals require wider separation distances from buildings, dispensers, and public ways.
- STI Flameshield® Option: Where Enhanced Southwest Research Institute (SwRI 97-04) fire-exposure performance is requested without concrete/insulation weight, double-wall Flameshield® assemblies bridge the gap.
UL-2085 Protected Tanks (STI Fireguard®): Maximum Setback Reduction
When installing gasoline or diesel storage on constrained urban parcels in Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, or San Antonio, fire code setback distances often dictate tank selection. UL-2085 "Protected" ASTs—exemplified by STI Fireguard® construction—encapsulate a primary steel tank inside lightweight monolithic thermal insulation and an outer steel secondary containment shell.
- 2-Hour 2,000°F Pool-Fire Rating: Tested to keep internal product temperatures well below auto-ignition thresholds during intense external fire exposure, plus ballistic and vehicle-impact resistance.
- Reduced Setback Footprints: Most Texas AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction) reduce required building and property-line separation distances by up to 50% or more for UL-2085 protected tanks compared to bare-steel UL-142 vessels.
- Turnkey Fleet Skid Integration: Easily configured as multi-compartment gasoline/diesel skids complete with submersible or suction pumps, high-hose retrievers, overfill prevention valves, and digital ATG telemetry.
Don't Overlook SPCC & TCEQ Registration Thresholds
Any facility with an aggregate aboveground oil/fuel storage capacity exceeding 1,320 U.S. gallons (counting containers 55 gallons and larger) that could reasonably discharge to navigable waters must maintain a federal Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan under EPA 40 CFR Part 112. In addition, certain petroleum product ASTs exceeding 1,100 gallons in Texas require registration and fee compliance under TCEQ Title 30 TAC Chapter 334 Subchapter F.
